Wax on, Wax off! 6 Tips for Bikini Waxing!

bikini wax tips, bikini wax nyc, bikini line, brazilian bikini waxI’m a bikini wax devotee, but it wasn’t always that way.

I remember being intrigued by the idea, but I was shy and had no clue what to expect, and thus I resorted to “self-styling” and less scandalous swimsuits than I preferred. How does one take the plunge into the world of waxing?

Here is a crash course on taking it all (or just some) off!

#1 Don’t be embarrassed.

There are so many reasons why women wax. I like the clean smooth feel of it, plus I find it sexy. Maybe you’re tired of your current “hair style” and would rather go without one for a while. Or you may be looking for a way to spice up your love life! Whatever the reason, don’t be shy about your body. Your waxer has seen it all before- literally! The experience will be private and nothing you can imagine hasn’t already happened to another woman before.

#2 Find a reputable salon.

MaxWaxJSisters, or Completely Bare. Don’t be cheap! I had my first wax in a nail salon because I was “intimidated” by the nicer places. Trust me, this was not the way to go! Make sure they have clean facilities, don’t re-use products, and have licensed technicians.

#3 Stop the trimming.

Your hair has to be long enough (at least a 1/4 inch) for the wax to grab. Avoid applying any  creams, oils, or lotions on the day of your appointment for the same reason. I find that popping an over the counter pain reliever like 400mg of Motrin helps ease sensitivity as well. Some salons actually use numbing creams on your skin to take the sting away, but these creams take quite a while to work which will make lengthen your session and probably cost more.

#4 Schedule at the right time.

Don’t book your treatment if it’s “that time of the month”, if you are currently using Accutane, if you have a yeast infection, or if you have skin irritation already. All of these things make your skin too sensitive for a safe and comfortable waxing experience.

How much or little you choose to take off is up  to you, and every salon will have a menu of styles for you to choose from. Here is a quick guide to help you get the look you want:

  • TRADITIONAL: Also called the American, Classic Bikini, or even Goody Two Shoes, you will be waxing just the sides of your bikini line and maybe a little off the top. That’s it! Definitely a difference, but it really just cleans things up.
  • FRENCH: You may have heard of this called the Landing Strip, Playboy Wax, or G-Wax and there’s a reason why! Wax will be applied to leave just a thin (an inch or so) strip of hair directly over your vulva. It’s up to you if you want to remove hair from between your “cheeks” as well,  but that’s not always included.
  • BRAZILIAN: Sphynx (ironically like the hairless cat!), Hollywood, or just plain Brazilian, this is the extreme of clean! All of the hair in your entire bikini area will be removed. Again, not every salon will include a “strip” in the back, so be sure to let your waxer know if you want it or not.

I’m not gonna lie, it’s gonna hurt (a little), especially if it’s your first time! It’s kind of like getting slapped, over and over, but it’s quick and the more you go the easier it gets. Try to relax;  bring your iPod or just breathe. You can ease the pain by taking another pain reliever or using a cool compress at home. A little baby powder keep irritation from clothing down as well.

#6 Enjoy!

beauty, Neutrogena Energizing Sugar Scubbeauty, loofahNow that you’ve survived your first wax, keep it looking lovely with some simple maintenance. Use a loofah ($2.99, drugstore.com) or washcloth and a gentle exfoliator, like Neutrogena’s  Energizing Sugar Scrub ($8.44, target.com), daily. It’s a little uncomfy, but it keeps ingrown hairs at bay. If you do end up with an ingrown, use a product like Tend Skin ($35, sephora.com) which will help ease the hair out where you can tweeze it, and keep your skin conditioned as well.

I hope a few solid facts take some of the pain out of choosing to wax. No matter how much you choose to bare on the beach or behind closed doors, waxing will turn a little less into a lot of fun!
